Sci/Tech Milestones for Settling the Solar System - JoeStrout - 10-19-2015 We are gearing up now to add a technology tree for version 0.20.  We're super excited about this, and wanted to give everyone else a chance to get your input in now, at the very early stages. We'll be taking elements from the Integrated Space Plan (which my older son, Kevin, has a poster of on his wall), as well as ideas from experts in the industry, like Jeff Greason's very sensible plan for cislunar infrastructure. But those plans usually only go about as far as Mars.  We want to cover the whole solar system!  So, what do you think?  What are the big achievements or developments that you would see as most useful to settling the solar system? The farther from Earth, the more attractive extracting local resources becomes. Momentum transfer tethers are nice for getting around, as are ion rockets. I'm also assuming that to operate around Jupiter, we are going to need space suits with an inch or two of built-in shielding. Cosmic rays are probably not an issue there, but trapped particles certainly are! That means the suits are going to have to be massive, and probably have integrated joint actuators so you can still move around. Yes, I'm proposing power suits. But if anybody can dig up any sober proposals or info along these lines, please let me know. What else can anyone think of for getting around & working in the outer solar system?
